Memoirs of an Amnesiac
Memoirs of an amnesiac highlights the bumpy and devastating optimism of a Chinese character whose recent life has been bordering on paranoia and insanity, somewhere between being locked up and rediscovering the world. Afraid, shut off inside a shelter in order to protect himself from a possible catastrophe, in Mains d'Œuvres, he imagines a purely fantastical reality and projects himself in a post-catastrophe era so as to better understand its whys and wherefores. His world is narrow and dark, full of convoluted logic and tortuous schemes.
Weary of his own neurosis, filled with obscure images, our fictional character decides to come out of his den and rediscover his city, Shanghai, looking strangely younger. The project 失忆症患者的记忆 presented at the Bazaar Compatible will be created on site with Xiang Liqing. It will echo this new vision of the city.
After having anticipated the future, and full of post-apocalyptic views, the character returns from the future and goes back to the past in order to avoid the potential catastrophe already so familiar to him. His chaotic optimism will be mostly revealed at the Maison populaire.

Memoirs of an amnesiac is a three-part project presented at the Bazaar Compatible in Shanghai from July 15th to July 27th 2014, then at Mains d'Oeuvres in Saint-Ouen (France) and at Maison populaire de Montreuil (France) from September to December 2014.
Xiang Liquing was born in Zhejiang province in 1973. Today he lives and works in Shanghai. Xiang Liquing works with painting, sculpture and photography. His abstract paintings express the same loss of center as his photograph series of nightmarish architecture. Within his paintings, no immediate or recognizable point of reference can be identified. His colorful composites may have dark and uncomfortable passages, but they are ultimately quiet celebrations of life. He is represented by ShanghART Gallery.
