In the work "Boxes", plaster bandage molds are formed from the surface of rubble, each from a different site of demolished houses within Nanjing. The plaster forms are sculptural photographs, that capture a site as it was at a specific moment in time, one that lies in the twilight of urban development. These moments are captured, collected, brought to Shanghai, and assembled together to form a geometric shape that encloses one equal space, or volume, that exists between them.

The use of destruction as a form of creation hybridizes different stages of an urban experience into one moment. The volume that is created, a separating factor between a demolished and a complete architectural form, re-contextualizes the axiomatic features of an architectural shape, the conditions of openness and closure. The connotations of a building are found in the volume that lies within the box, not as much in the surface area, the actual floors, walls, and ceilings that enclose the space. The work questions how we interact with the architectural "box" as the framework of a city, and how it interacts with us in return.
